安楽死（あんらくし、英語: euthanasia）とは、人または動物に苦痛を与えずに死に至らせることである。一般的に終末期患者に対する医療上の処遇を意味して表現される。安楽死推進団体に所属し、スイスで安楽死したオーストラリアの環境学・植物学者 デイビット・グッドールは「ふさわしい時に死を選ぶ自由」と定義している。 安楽死に至る方法として、積極的安楽死（英語: positive euthanasia , active euthanasia）と、消極的安楽死（英語: negative euthanasia , passive euthanasia）の二種類がある。安楽死の別表現として、尊厳死（英語: dignified death , death with dignity）という言葉がある。 これは、積極的安楽死と消極的安楽死の両方を表現する場合と、安楽死を本人の事前の希望に限定して尊厳死と表現する場合があるが、世界保健機関、世界医師会、国際連合人権理事会、国家の法律、医療行政機関、医師会などの公的な機関による、明確または統一的な定義は確認されていない。 (安楽死 – Wikipedia)

Euthanasia (from Greek: εὐθανασία; “good death”: εὖ, eu; “well” or “good” – θάνατος, thanatos; “death”) is the practice of intentionally ending a life to relieve pain and suffering. Different countries have different euthanasia laws. The British House of Lords Select Committee on Medical Ethics defines euthanasia as “a deliberate intervention undertaken with the express intention of ending a life, to relieve intractable suffering”. In the Netherlands and Belgium, euthanasia is understood as “termination of life by a doctor at the request of a patient”. The Dutch law however, does not use the term ‘euthanasia’ but includes the concept under the broader definition of “assisted suicide and termination of life on request”. (Euthanasia – Wikipedia)
