LATEST NEWS
So what’s been happening since our last newsletter?
Quite a lot actually…

Our annual concert in aid of The Rowans Hospice took place on November 18th and raised almost £800, which is a fantastic total, which will go towards their provision of quite wonderful care and love for those who need it so very much.

Last week we played at a Sheltered Accommodation centre in Portsmouth for our annual evening of Christmas music, and they’ve already asked us to return same time next year!
And as has now become a tradition, we adjourn to a local eating house afterwards to share a Christmas meal.

We have a few more pounds to add to our fund-raising total, but this year, it’s grown to over £52,000 and proof, if ever there was a need to state the obvious, that in a recession, people are still happy to be generous when it’s for people less fortunate than themselves.

WHAT’S COMING UP?
It’s the close season for hago right now – we don’t want to sit in a stone church in shirtsleeves till we’re sure spring is on its way.
But we have some excellent concerts lined up for 2011, and we’ll send you details of each of them in good time, and as soon as we have the ticket price and booking information.
In fact two of them came good this week, so we’re able to report that we have 5 definite concerts and a “very likely” already pencilled in, and a number of these are at 400-seater venues.

If your new year’s resolution is to do more with guitar, or even, perhaps, to learn to play as a complete beginner, Derek, our MD, has one-to-one vacancies during the day – ideal if you are retired or working flexible hours. You can “reply” to this email, but if you want to read up a bit more first, visit Derek’s tuition pages. You see, you might just find that someone’s given you a nice guitar for Christmas!

LOOKING BACK OVER 2010
It’s been an exciting year for hago. We said goodbye to three long standing players, but we’ve welcomed two more that between them have strengthened our team even more.
But that doesn’t mean that we don’t welcome enquiries from other players too. We’re increasingly performing more challenging and more exciting pieces, so we’re looking for someone who is at least Grade 6. You can find more details on our website.

We played marginally fewer concerts this year, and so our fund-raising for charity didn’t grow quite so much, but it’s still climbing quickly upwards, and we crossed the £50,000 mark halfway through the year.

Also halfway through the year, we crossed the 20,000 viewings mark for our YouTube channel, and now (in December) we’ve crossed 30,000.

Indeed we added 3 more videos during the year.

And we’ve added one today too – a short Christmas message – you can view it by clicking here

You can catch up with the more recent events of 2010 in our news page, and with earlier news in our 2010 news page and our 2010 photo gallery.

A CHRISTMAS WISH
It’s under a week to go until Christmas Day. With subscribers all over the world, in different climates, and with different beliefs, it’s not easy to find a message that sums everything up.
For us on the South Coast of England, we are looking out on snow – a real rarity in these parts, even in the coldest part of winter – and that makes us feel Christmassy, I can tell you!
But whether you believe in the message of Christmas or not, it is a time of year when we are rightly encouraged to think of others who are less fortunate.
Virtually every concert that we play is in aid of a local charity, so all of us in hago thank the many of you who ARE able to come to our concerts, for all you have done this year to help raise money to help provide goods and services for those in need.
We hope too, that you’ll be able to come to one of our concerts in 2011, and help us again do what we do best – run concerts that raise money for charity.

From all thirteen of us in hago, we wish you the merriest of Christmases and, more importantly may you have good health and good fortune in 2011, and the energy to use both of them to the full.

  1. Those in the know will appreciate quite a few guitar orchestras are actually ensembles. But with HAGO The Hampshire Guitar Orchestra youll get the real thing when they present an evenings entertainment at The West Sussex Guitar Club on Saturday April 25 at 7.30pm at the Regis School of Music 46 Sudley Road Bognor Regis.HAGO is based near Havant and consists of 14 enthusiastic players using a range of four different guitar sizes and thats what makes it an orchestra rather than an ensemble say HAGO director and founder Derek Hasted.Rather than just the standard classical guitar you also get the slightly-smaller alto guitar the slightly-larger bass and also the contra all of which significantly increases the range freeing the orchestra from the limitations of pitch that constrain usual guitar ensembles. We are ten years old now Derek explains. The other half the formal half became HAGO with a focus on doing it for real. We started off playing two concerts a year for local charities and now we play about ten each year. As for the programme Derek is promising wide-ranging entertainment We tend to play a programme of music that is not guitar music.
